My ignition lock will not turn when I put the key in - what's wrong?

It is possible that your steering wheel lock is binding. To check for this, try to turn the ignition key on while at the same time trying to force the steering wheel to the left and then to the right. If this causes your ignition to release and operate properly, then no repair is necessary. If you continue to have problems, the most likely problem is a faulty ignition lock cylinder which needs to be repaired or replaced.

Why do I need to jiggle my ignition key in the lock for it to work?

This is likely caused either by a heavily worn key or an ignition lock which is starting to fail. Continued use of heavily worn keys can cause locks to eventually fail completely. An automotive locksmith can determine the cause of the problem, or you can try using a key which is not worn. If all of your existing keys are worn, obtain a new key cut to original specifications or "cut to code" - a locksmith can do this for you if you specifically request it. If this does not solve the problem, it is best to have the lock repaired before it stops working completely later, leaving you stranded, and often times adding to the cost of the repair.
